🏔️ Bhaba Pass Trek: The Grand Crossover

From the Green Valley of Kinnaur to the Cold Desert of Spiti

Overview:The Bhaba Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic crossover treks in the Himalayas. You will start in the dense forests and meadows of Kinnaur and cross the high altitude pass at 4,890M to descend into the surreal, purple-hued mountains of Spiti’s Pin Valley. This distinct change in landscape is a visual spectacle that few other treks offer.

🗓️ Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: The Journey Begins

🚗 Drive: Shimla to Kafnu

  • Altitude: 2,400 m
  • Distance: 201 km (8–9 Hours)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Shimla, winding along the Sutlej River deep into the Kinnaur district. You will pass the Wangtu bridge and ascend towards the small hydroelectric village of Kafnu, the trailhead for the trek.

Stay: Guesthouse/Homestay in Kafnu.

Day 2: Into the Forest

🥾 Trek: Kafnu to Muling

  • Altitude: 3,200 m
  • Trek: 10–12 km (6–7 Hours)

The trek starts on a well-defined trail alongside the thundering Bhaba River. You will walk through dense forests of pine, cedar, and deodar. The ascent is gradual but continuous. As you reach Muling, the forest opens up into a lush green meadow, offering the first true camping experience of the expedition.

Highlight: The roaring sound of the Bhaba river accompanying you all day.

Day 3: The Meadows of Kara

🥾 Trek: Muling to Kara

  • Altitude: 3,500 m
  • Trek: 7–8 km (5–6 Hours)

Today is a mesmerizing walk through alpine meadows. The trail steepens slightly as you leave the tree line behind. You will cross natural streams and witness the valley widening. Kara is a vast, grassy campsite often carpeted with wildflowers in the summer months, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks.

Terrain: Alpine meadows and river banks.

Day 4: High Camp Approach

🥾 Trek: Kara to Phustrang

  • Altitude: 3,950 m
  • Trek: 5–6 km (4–5 Hours)

A short but significant day. You will navigate a river crossing—an adrenaline-pumping experience requiring teamwork. The trail ascends towards Phustrang, the base camp for the pass. The vegetation becomes sparse as you enter the high-altitude zone. The scenery begins to turn rugged, preparing you for the pass crossing.

Challenge: Glacial stream crossing (cold water!).

Day 5: Acclimatization Day

🛌 Rest Day at Phustrang

  • Altitude: 3,950 m

To ensure a safe crossing of the high pass, today is reserved for rest and active acclimatization. You may take short walks to gain some height and return to camp (Climb High, Sleep Low principle). Prepare your gear for the early morning push tomorrow.

Tip: Drink plenty of water and enjoy the silence of the high mountains.

Day 6: The Summit Day

🏔️ Trek: Phustrang to Baldar via Bhaba Pass

  • Max Altitude: 4,890 m (16,043 ft)
  • Camp Altitude: 3,850 m (Baldar)
  • Trek: 14–15 km (10–12 Hours)

The biggest day of the expedition. You will start pre-dawn to climb the steep ascent over moraines and snow patches. Reaching the Bhaba Pass is a moment of triumph—behind you lies the green Kinnaur, and ahead lies the arid, chocolate-colored mountains of Spiti's Pin Valley. The descent is steep and enters the stark landscape of Baldar.

Spectacle: The instant 180-degree change in landscape at the top of the pass.

Day 7: Enter Spiti Valley

🥾 Trek: Baldar to Mudh | 🚗 Drive to Tabo

  • Trek: 7–8 km (4–5 Hours)
  • Drive: 65 km (2 Hours)
  • End Altitude: 3,280 m (Tabo)

A gentle walk along the Pin River brings you to the picturesque village of Mudh, the first settlement in Spiti. With its purple mountains and pea fields, Mudh is a photographer's dream. After lunch, meet your transport and drive to Tabo.

Cultural Gem: Visit the Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO heritage site known as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas," dating back to 996 AD.

Day 8: The Himalayan Highway

🚗 Drive: Tabo to Kalpa

  • Distance: 160 km (5–6 Hours)

Drive back towards Kinnaur via the confluence of the Spiti and Sutlej rivers. You will head to Kalpa, a beautiful town perched high above Recong Peo.

View: Enjoy the sunset over the majestic Kinner Kailash range (6,050 m) visible directly from Kalpa.

Day 9: Homeward Bound

🚗 Drive: Kalpa to Shimla

  • Distance: 210 km (8–9 Hours)

The final leg of the journey takes you back to Shimla through the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, marking the end of an epic trans-Himalayan adventure.
